George Washington

 

 
 

George Washington, a wealthy Virginia planter, was named Commander-in-Chief of the colonial armies in 1775 during the American Revolution. Over the next five years he endured the hardship of war, and the harsh winter at Valley Forge. Washington's character was instrumental in holding the American soldiers together during difficult times.

George Washington was the first person to be elected President of the United States in 1789. Four years later, he was reelected.

 

To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.
